Computer Science User Account Policy

Creation

  • All Computer Science accounts will be created online here: https://admin.cs.vt.edu/create.pl
  • The username will match the user's Virginia Tech username exactly.
  • The password can and should be different from the user's Virginia Tech password. Password policies can be found here: Password Requirements

Access

There are different types of accounts depending on the user's affiliation with the Computer Science department.

Faculty

This account type is reserved for Computer Science faculty and non-CS faculty working with the department. They have access to email, personal storage, a personal website, remote login, course websites, and research websites. Faculty accounts are kept until they are deemed no longer needed.

Staff

This account type is reserved for Computer Science staff and non-CS staff working with the department. They have access to email, personal storage, a personal website, and remote login. Staff accounts are kept as long as the user is working in the department.

Grad

This account type is reserved for active Computer Science graduate students in the department. They have access to email, personal storage, a personal website, and remote login. Grad accounts are kept for at least one year after graduation.

Major

This account type is reserved for active Computer Science undergraduate students in the department. They have access to personal storage, a personal website, and remote login. Major accounts are kept for at least one year after graduation.

Other

This account type is reserved for active non-CS undergraduate or graduate students taking a class in the department. They have access to personal storage and remote login. Other accounts are deactivated after each semester, the user will need to re-add their account if needed for the following semester.

Guest

This account type is used for users that do not fall under any of the other account types. Access can be customized based on their requirements. Guest accounts are kept until they are deemed no longer needed.

Retention

Account retention is based on the account type. Retention for each account type can be seen in the account type descriptions above [1].
