| | Note: HP Drivers for Mac have become a little more difficult to access. HP wants you to use HP Easy Start to set up your printer but often on the VT network the Easy Start app is unable to locate the printer which makes it so it can't download the driver. Techstaff recommends downloading the HP Easy Admin tool found at [https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06164609]. This tool will allow you to select the model printer and version of MacOS and download the essential software. While installing the software it was required to approve a security allowance twice and restart the macbook to enable the extensions. |

Connecting to Printers
Windows 10
- Start -> Settings -> Devices
- Select printers & Scanners on the left
- Add printer or scanner
- Click the new link “the printer that I want isn’t listed”
- Add printer using tcp/ip address or hostname
- Autodetect
- Diamondback.cs.vt.edu
- Diamondback.cs.vt.edu
- Query the printer and automatically select the driver
- Let it use the driver installed or download.
- Give it a name (Diamondback or something)
- Do not share this printer
- Next
- If you will be using this one most. Select ‘set as default’
- Finish

- Click the Apple
- Go to System Preferences
- Go to Printers and Scanners
- Click the plus to add a printer
- Click on the World Icon (IP)
- Enter <Address here: See above> in the Address bar
- Select Protocol: HP JetDirect - Socket
- Wait for it to populate the rest of the fields
- If you have downloaded the drivers listed above, In the Use dropdown choose select software.
- Select the driver for your specific printer
- Click Add

Linux - Ubuntu
- Open Show Applications -> Settings -> Devices -> Printers
- Click Add a Printer
- Type the network address in the search bar at the bottom
- Select your printer from the list e.g. JetDirect-Printer
- On the Driver Screen, Select the manufacturer and Driver e.g. Hewlett-Packard and M401
- Note: If your driver isn't available in the list, you can select Generic and Generic PCL to finish setup and then under the printer change the driver to a ppd that you download from the manufacturers site.
- If you need to change the driver click the gear on the printer in the Devices menu
- Click printer Details -> Install PPD
- Navigate to the PPD you Downloaded and select it.

Linux - Centos
- Click Activities -> Type printers in the search box -> Select Printers
- Click Unlock -> Provide Password if needed -> Click Add
- Type the network address in the search bar at the bottom
- Select your printer from the list e.g. JetDirect-Printer
- On the Driver Screen, Select the manufacturer and Driver e.g. Hewlett-Packard and M401
- Note: If your driver isn't available in the list, you can select Generic and Generic PCL to finish setup and then under the printer change the driver to a ppd that you download from the manufacturers site.
- If you need to change the driver click the gear on the printer in the Devices menu

- You can change additional features of the Printer under the gear -> Printing Options

Connecting to the CBB Shared Printers
- Note: These instructions only apply the the printers in Torgersen 2160V
Windows
- Click start -> Settings -> Devices -> Printers & Scanners
- Click add a printer or scanner
- Click "The printer that I want isn't listed"
- Select "Select a shared printer by name"
- Input the URL to the printer in the following format: http://<ServerName>:631/printers/<PrintQueue>
- (example: http://bioinformatics.cs.vt.edu:631/printers/2160-hp-color-m452dn)
- Click Next
- On the popup to select driver, click windows update unless you have downloaded the specific driver
- Select your printer driver from the two lists (example: HP Color LaserJet Pro M452 PCL6)
- Click next to finish
- Select whether you want to print a test page or not and close the window

MacOS
- Click on the Apple, Go to System Preferences
- Click on Printers & Scanners
- Click on the + Sign
- Click IP
- Enter the address you are trying to connect to (Example: bioinformatics.cs.vt.edu)
- Select IPP if it isn't already selected
- Enter the printer you are wanting to use (Example: printers/2160-hp-color-m452dn)
- Enter a name for the printer (Example: 2160-hp-color-m452dn)
- (Optional) Enter a Location for the printer
- Choose either "Select Software" to select an already install driver or "Choose Driver" if you have downloaded a specific driver.
- Click Add
- If prompted select any additional features the printer may have
- Click Ok

Linux - Ubuntu
- Open Show Applications -> Settings -> Devices -> Printers -> Additional Printer Settings
- Click Add
- Type the network address in the uri bar ipp://bioinformatics.cs.vt.edu/printers/PRINTER_QUEUE (In place of PRINTER_QUEUE, type in the name of the queue you want to use from the list above)
- Click Forward
- On the Choose Driver screen, either look for your printer in the database or select Provide PPD and navigate to the driver file you downloaded
- Select any Additional Options that are available for your printer, click forward
- Describe your printer and click Apply

Linux - Centos
Works with Centos 7 but not Centos 8*
- Open terminal and enter the command: sudo system-printer-config
- This will open the Printer configuration window
- Enter the URL to the CBB Printers: ipp://bioinformatics.cs.vt.edu/printers/PRINTER_QUEUE (Insert the name of the printer queue you are wanting to use in place of PRINTER_QUEUE)
- Click Forward
- Either select your printer Driver from database or if it isn't there select provide PPD file and navigate to the driver you downloaded.
- Click Forward
- Select any Options the printer has from the list and click forward again
- Describe your Printer and Click Apply

- For Centos 8 you can Add a Printer using the cups installation window found by pointing your web browser at http://localhost:631/admin
- Requires an Admin Username and Password on the System.
